MacBook Top Case (Topcase) Replacement

On MacBook models made after 2016, the keyboard, battery and trackpad are riveted to a single-piece upper case. A topcase replacement renews all three parts at once, and the device feels as though it has just left the factory.

What Is the Topcase (Upper Case)?

The top case is the aluminium upper body of the MacBook which carries the keyboard, the trackpad, the loudspeakers and, on most models, the battery. Since Apple has riveted the keyboard to this casing from 2016 onwards, replacing the keyboard on its own is not possible on most models; in the event of a keyboard fault the entire upper case is renewed.

When Is a Topcase Replacement Necessary?

What Must Definitely Be Done Before The Replacement

1. Take a Backup

The drive is not touched during a topcase replacement, but we recommend that you make a Time Machine backup before any major work. If you wish, we can also make the backup for you.

2. Prepare Your Apple Account and Your Passwords

During the test phase the device may need to be started up and the keyboard and Touch ID verified. You need to know your lock screen password.

3. The Touch ID Question

The Touch ID sensor is paired with the logic board. During replacement the sensor must be transferred correctly; otherwise the fingerprint function will not work. This detail is overlooked in most places; we discuss it from the outset.

What Do You Gain After the Repair?

New Keyboard

Sticking keys and keys that register twice are a thing of the past. The key markings look like new.

New Battery

On models where the battery is part of the casing, battery life is reset as well.

New Trackpad

Click feel and gesture sensitivity return to factory condition.

A Proper Case

Bending and dents are eliminated, the lid closes flush.
